The Israeli video scene is as diverse as anywhere else in the world. What is striking, however, is that the performers of the films are often the artists themselves. Still the theme of “identity” and the question of one’s own limits of freedom are still leading many artistic discussions in Israel.
The works presented here approach the subject in different ways. Starting from their own biographies, they illuminate personal life moments, conflict situations between generations and in everyday life, as well as historical aspects. They transform clichés, memories and the pain of their own history into a humorous, absurd or threatening visual language, achieving an intensity that is palpable to the viewer.
The exhibition shows 8 video performances and a video installation by artists of different generations. It concentrates on so-called close-up videos in which the artist acts directly in front of a permanently installed camera. The works approach the viewer with great intensity and seriousness, but also humorously and playfully.
